In a large skillet cook onion in hot oil about 3 minutes or just till tender. Add walnuts and sugar. Cook and stir about 5 minutes or till onion is slightly caramelized and walnuts are lightly toasted. Stir in mustard.
Spoon onion mixture atop each of the bread slices. Sprinkle with the cheese. If desired, cover bread slices and let stand at room temperature up to one hour.
To serve, place bread slices, onion side up, directly over medium-hot coals about 2 minutes or just till bottoms are toasted and slices are heated through.
